Getting to know... Lydia Wilson

We wanted to help you get to know some of the people who help make netball in Mid Canterbury so awesome. So we've put a few questions to some of our players, umpires and coaches to give you an insight. Up first, it's one of our umpires who has been selected to officiate at the U18 nationals next month, Lydia Wilson!

Name: Lydia Wilson

Role: Umpire

How did you first get in to umpiring?

I was about 11 and was curious as to what umpiring was all about when I was a player. So, mum enrolled me in a junior introductory umpire course for the day! I ended up loving it and haven't looked back since.

Do you have a pre-match routine you follow, and if so what is it?

I always have to warm up at least half an hour before my game... I get my headphones on, blast some music and try to get in the zone as much as I can! I try to be at the court 10 to 15 minutes before the game starts to help me feel calm and prepared too. Always making sure I have something to eat a couple of hours before a big game is also really important as it makes sure I have heaps of energy.

Top two songs on your play list when warming up?

Very tough choices, I always have to have upbeat songs to get me going! At the moment it's probably:

Used To This - Wilkinson

As It Was - Harry Styles

What’s your favourite thing about umpiring?

All the different people I am able to connect with! This includes other umpires, umpire coaches, bench officials, players, coaches and managers etc. Umpiring is a great way to meet new people and give back to the netball community I am so lucky to be a part of.

What’s the best piece of advice you received when starting out as an umpire?

Just believe in yourself and always trust your gut, 9/10 times you will be making the right call!
