We wanted to help you get to know some of the people who help make netball in Mid Canterbury so awesome. So we've put a few questions to some of our players, umpires and coaches to give you an insight. Up today, it's Jan Lee!
Name: Jan Lee
Role: Umpire
How did you first get in to umpiring?
Got into umpiring just as a matter of course really and found that I quite enjoyed it. We had fantastic people at the Middle Rd courts who were very supportive and encouraged you to go further.
Do you have a pre-match routine you follow, and if so what is it?
I do have a pre match routine which is running a few lengths of the court to loosen up these old bones and then stretches and movements that I'll be making within the game. Pretty much the same as everyone else I imagine. I also make sure I've had something to eat before the game.
If you listen to music while warming up, what would be the top two songs on your play list?
No, I don't listen to music beforehand but if I did it would probably be something upbeat.
What’s your favourite thing about umpiring?
My favourite thing about umpiring is the people. Those who play, umpire and the young kids who are starting out on their umpiring journey. It's awesome to see them grow and develop into confident, strong umpires.
What’s the best piece of advice you received when starting out as an umpire?
The best piece of advice I received was to take all the feedback on board but concentrate on getting one thing right before moving onto the next. Keep trying because the penny will drop one day!
