We wanted to help you get to know some of the people who help make netball in Mid Canterbury so awesome. So we've put a few questions to some of our players, umpires and coaches to give you an insight. Up today, it's Jamie Worner!
Name: Jamie Worner
Role: Coach of Methven Shearmac
How long have you been involved in netball for?
I have been involved in netball for a wee while now with a mix of playing for Tinwald South club when I was growing up earlier in my days and also now having my some of my own children playing for the Methven club.
What was the first team you coached?
I did co-coach a team years ago when my eldest was very little (now 16), for Tinwald South club.
What’s the most rewarding part of being a coach?
The most rewarding part of coaching is having a team of great young teenagers, where you watch them grow every practice and game, also seeing them achieve their own goals with a bit of hard work and them learning together as a team.
How would you describe your coaching style?
To be honest I don’t really have a coaching style, my coaching style is that I like to have fun, that’s the main thing or they will get bored. Changing it up a bit is needed as sometimes they need serious conversation about how they are playing and what needs to be worked on.
What advice would you give to someone considering taking up coaching?
I always wanted to coach when my kids were growing up but never got the courage to say yes. However this year I said “yup I would love too”. But going from not coaching to coaching a prem team was a bit scary at first, however there is so much support out there to do it whether it’s a friend, another coach, the internet, and also the girls you are coaching. Don’t be afraid to ask for help as I am always, and I mean always, asking someone every week about something or advice about drills, how to move on this part of the court.
